City of Ontario

Nicknamed “The City that Charms”, Ontario is situated just south of Mt. Baldy and is bordered to the north by Upland, to the east by Rancho Cucamonga, and Montclair to the west. The city’s growing population of 185,010 sits just 35 east of downtown Los Angeles and 23 miles west of San Bernadino.

Ontario has transformed from a 0.38 square-mile area when it was first incorporated in the late 1800s to an area covering of 49.94 square miles. It now has many park areas for outdoor recreation, causing niche.com to rank it #49 of 228 as one of the “Best Cities for Outdoor Activities in America.”

Ontario prides itself on its environment and active residents. Niche.com rated it #135 or 228 for being one of the “Healthiest Cities in America” and #135 of 228 for being one of the “Healthiest Places to Live in America.” In a 2019 “Resident Satisfaction Survey,” 92% of respondents said they felt safe in Ontario and 73% of respondents ranked Ontario an eight or above on a scale of 1 to 10. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of the latest statistics for 2017, the median household income was $60,086. The average age of residents is 33.2 years old, as opposed to California’s overall median age of 36.5 years old.

Ontario is home to 11,000 businesses that employ a total of 119,425 workers. The Ontario International Airport, the 15th-busiest airport in the U.S. by cargo carried, had over 72 daily departures and 5.5 million people pass through it in 2019.

Out of the 87 schools in Ontario, there are 37 elementary schools, 21 middle schools, 19 high schools and 10 private & charter schools. Its five school districts include Ontario/Montclair Elementary, Mt View Elementary, Cucamonga Elementary, Chino Unified and Chaffey Joint Union in the City borders. All of its schools are rated above average by greatschools.org.

In addition, there are approximately 38 colleges in the area, including 25 private colleges and universities, 3 public colleges and universities, and 10 community colleges that offer 2-year degrees.

Ontario consists of 9 neighborhoods. As of September 2020, there were 514 homes for sale, ranging from $1.5K to $8.3M. Realtor.com reports that Ontario is a seller’s market, meaning there are more buyers than homes for sale. The best neighborhoods are considered Ontario Ranch, Creekside and Eden Glen.

Aside from all of its outdoor charm, Ontario has three museums: the Ontario Museum of History and Art the Chaffey Community Museum of Art and the Ontario Police Museum. It is also home to the 200-plus stores of Ontario Mills, which is considered the largest one-story shopping mall in California.
