With 71,586 residents, Redlands is a community dedicated to maintaining a small-town feel despite its blossoming population. Niche.com voted it as the third best city to live in San Bernadino County. It sits at the base of the picturesque San Bernadino Mountains, just 60 miles northeast of Los Angeles and 45 miles west of Palm Springs. It is just a short drive to the beach, desert and the mountains.
Redlands’ history is what makes it special. This can be seen throughout its many antique buildings. These include the A.K. Smiley Public Library, a Moorish-style library built in 1898, and the Redlands Bowl, which was built in 1930 and has the oldest continuously free outdoor concert series in the state. Other historic landmarks in the city include famous homes such as “America’s Favorite Victorian,” the Morey House, and the Kimberly Crest House and Gardens, which was featured on A&E Network’s series “America’s Castles.” Other sites of interest in and around the city are the Historical Glass Museum and the Lincoln Shrine, the only museum west of the Mississippi dedicated to the 16th president.
Niche.com ranked it #76 out of 525 for being one of the “Most Diverse Suburbs in California” and #151 out of 525 for being one of the “Best Suburbs to Raise a Family in California.” The median income is $72,523, which is much higher than the national average of $55,322. The average age of residents is 39.1 years old.
Redlands is also extremely family-friendly. Parks abound throughout the city, including Sylvan Park, which is popular with locals. The 23.3-acre park has picnic areas, a playground, a volleyball court, a stage, and even offers free lawn bowling lessons.
Realtor.com reports that Redlands is a seller’s market, meaning there are more people looking to buy homes than there are available homes in its five neighborhoods. According to the site, “Some of the best neighborhoods in or around Redlands, California are South Redlands, North Redlands, and San Timoteo-Live Oak Canyon.” As of September 2020, there are 333 homes for sale.
Redlands has a total of 49 schools, including 17 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 9 high schools, and 15 private & charter schools. Its educational institutions are routinely rated above average by greatschools.org.
The city is also home to the University of Redlands, which was named “One of Higher Ed’s Best Kept Secrets” in the 2019 Fiske Guide to Colleges which recognizes “congenial campus living, flexibility of academic programs, easy access to professors and generous financial aid.” The Princeton Review 2019 rated it as one of its “Best 378 Colleges” and Forbes named it one of “America’s Top Colleges.”
