To Prevent Identify Theft

  •  Never give any personal info in an email.
  •  All web sites should be HTTP: Do not reply or use the link provided when given alerts. Go to your own favorites and confirm   web site
  •  If online banking, change password every 45 days.(Do not keep in a place where family or friends can have access)
  •  Don’t use debit card. No way to track theft until 30 days out (unless you’re checking daily) or after your account is at zero.  Only  have 60 days to object to any EFT/debit disputes.
  • Have a photo/scanned copy or copy of all items in your wallet
  • With cross cut shredder, shred all utility bills, mail, and any documents with your name, address, Social Security Number or any personal information on it.
  • Go to www.annualcreditreport.com. Allows two times per year.

When dealing with people, clients, vendors or others who want to cheat, steal or take advantage of you and not pay your bill, consider the following:

  • Fully ID the person, business and obtain a personal guarantor.
  • Obtain a contract or send an email to memorialize your agreement in writing. (If you fail to do so, you have an uphill “he said she said” battle in court.
  • Secure a UCC Filing whenever possible. Large loans or investments,
  • Work with a licensed person whenever possible. Contractors Board does not regulate unlicensed people.
  • Collections – Send a box of candy on large bills and let them know it would be sweet of them to pay your bill.
  • Send an invoice for services rendered. Then a final demand letter confirming business agreement, and failure to pay. Send certified and/or proof of delivery.
  • Always try to talk and negotiate before court. A judgment is a win…but collecting is still another process.
