Over the years, San Dimas has changed from a quaint rural area to a thriving city of 34,109. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County and is bordered by the San Gabriel Mountain range to the north, Glendora and Covina to the west, La Verne to its north and east, Pomona to its south and east, and Walnut to the southwest. It is considered a suburb of Los Angeles and beaches are easily accessible.
The less populous city prides itself on its educated population. More than 92.3% have graduated high school and 31.9% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. The median household income between 2007-2011 was $74,610 as compared to California’s average of $61,632. Many of those who live there are between 45 and 64 years old. The median age of a resident there is 42.1 compared to California’s median age of 36.7.
San Dimas is home to 32 schools, including 13 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 8 high schools and 4 private & charter schools. All are rated above average by greatschools.org. Additionally, there are 114 colleges within 50 miles of the smaller city, including the top rated Pomona College in nearby Claremont.
While San Dimas is a smaller city, there are many things to see and do there. The 1,700 acre Frank G. Bonelli Recreational Area is within the city’s boundaries as is San Dimas Canyon Park, which has a golf course and 27 equestrian trails. Raging Waters Los Angeles, the largest waterpark in California, is also located there.
In addition, the Pacific Railroad Museum is worth a visit. The free museum is housed in a former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Depot and the interior resembles a working railroad station.
Realtor.com reports that San Dimas is a seller’s market, meaning there are more people who want to buy homes there than there are available homes. As of September 2020, there were 114 homes for sale.
According to the city’s website, “A bright future lies ahead for San Dimas. Its growth is based upon a solid foundation and the projections are that in a decade its population will reach 40,000, and its reputation as a City that tries ‘to preserve the western spirit’ will grow with the population growth.”
